Porridge

Everyday porridge — oats, half water, half milk of your choice, and the pinch of salt that makes all the difference. On the stove in minutes, or hands-off in the rice cooker.

Ingredients

Let’s make it.

  1. On the stove. Put the oats, water, milk and salt in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring now and then.
  2. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring more often towards the end, until the oats are soft and the porridge is creamy and spoonable. Add a splash more milk if it gets too thick.
  3. Take off the heat and let it rest for a minute — it thickens a little as it stands. Serve in a warm bowl with the topping of your choice.
  4. In the Zojirushi rice cooker. Put the oats, water, milk and salt in the inner pot and give it a stir.
  5. Close the lid, select the regular Oatmeal setting and start. When the cooker beeps, stir, check the texture, and serve.
